Hello, all!
It is time to announce the House Points as they stand after the first round of Quidditch. Because of the 50 pt. participation bonus a few of the houses went over 100%.

No houses need be discouraged, however! One week of missed posts or a different house finding the Snitch can turn things around. Constant Vigilance!!

1st Place ~ Slytherin ~ 125%

2nd Place ~ Ravenclaw & Hufflepuff ~ 106%

3rd Place ~ Gryffindor ~ 96%

Well this is a Harry Potter themed swap, so it's time to get your Harry Potter dork on ;)  This quiz is due Thursday midnight.  Clidonia Acromantula, our resident barista, will be providing the prize - the winner's choice of 1lb of Stabucks coffee, a box of tea, a box of chai or a box of pods.  (For more info try Clidonia).

Other houses can take the Quiz, but only Hufflepuffs will be entered into the drawing.

The Quiz...
1 Which is your favorite book in the series (and why)?

2 If you were taking Owls, which class would you get an E in?  Would you get any Ts?

3 Who is your favorite character (or characters) in the Harry Potter series?

4 If you had to pick 1 character for a roomate, who would you pick and why?  Who'd be your least-favorite to have as a roomate?

5 Hufflepuffs are a hardworking bunch, but also a bit mischevious.  Which Hogwarts professor would you most like to prank, and how would you do it?

6 Favorite DADA professor? (from the books, Lucius does NOT count :)

7 Favorite magical creatures?  (Also, if for example you like a certain creature in general, but not how they are represented in the HP canon, feel free to elaborate :)

8 What is your favorite food in the HP universe?  Which food or foods would you like to try in real life?  Do you have any recipes to share with us ;)?

9 Broom, floo powder, portkey, or magic carpet?

10 Since we're Hufflepuffs... Yellow or Black?

An Angel Named Penelope

During last term I suffered from the dreaded "Missing In Action" owl. Thanks to Deputy Headmistress Wisteria Lovegood and Penelope of Flitwick, I received an Angel package today.

Game Over!!!

Many congrats goes to

Thanks for participating, everyone!!!

Quidditch Clue

I remember when rock was young
Me and Suzie had so much fun
holding hands and skimming stones
Had an old gold Chevy and a place of my own
But the biggest kick I ever got
was doing a thing called the Crocodile Rock
While the other kids were Rocking Round the Clock
we were hopping and bopping to the Crocodile Rock

Well Crocodile Rocking is something shocking
when your feet just can't keep still
I never knew me a better time and I guess I never will
Oh Lawdy mama those Friday nights
when Suzie wore her dresses tight
and the Crocodile Rocking was out of sight

But the years went by and the rock just died
Suzie went and left us for some foreign guy
Long nights crying by the record machine
dreaming of my Chevy and my old blue jeans
But they'll never kill the thrills we've got
burning up to the Crocodile Rock
Learning fast as the weeks went past
we really thought the Crocodile Rock would last

When you've found the Snitch post a comment to this post.

One Note: I mentioned that the Snitch will never be hidden in the comments section of anyone's blog. All bets are off concerning clues, however.

First one to the finish line wins!!! Good Luck!!!

Are you ready for some Quidditch troops? Brooms at the ready... Let's head out onto the pitch with our Pride held high!!

Some call it magic,
These things that I see.
And I don't understand
Why it happens to me.
But I know that I have it,
For it blooms from within.
It beckons and calls
As I weave and I spin.
Some call it magic,
These things that I see.
I must listen and learn
As ancient voices guide me.
Their magic is strong,
So I answer their call.
For I am sorted
To the best house of all.
The Mighty Ravenclaw!

We can do it Ravenclaw! Go, Fight, and SOAR HIGH!!

IT'S OUR TIME RAVENCLAW!

Slytherin Quiz #1 Winner

THE WINNER

TO SLYTHERIN

QUIZ ONE IS
...
...
...

Cassandra Black!!

Congratulation!! You have won a skein of custom dyed yarn by our own Prefect Eleanor Cadogan!! Here is her Etsy store so you can see some of her handy work:
(check out her feedback section, there are also great yarns in the sold section). The two of you can choose colors for your custom yarn! Congrats!

Okay ladies and gentlemen ... The signups for the dueling club are officially closed. We have a total of 38 participants this round: 26 will be crafting hats and 12 will be knitting socks.

So, with wands at the ready … Here is what each of your duels will require:

Crochet Hat Pattern Specs
The crocheted hat will require a skein (less than 200 yards) of worsted weight yarn. You will also be using a K (6.5 mm) hook as well as an I (5.5 mm) hook. The recommended gauge is 3 dc (with the K hook) is equal to one inch. Tools include a yarn needle (for tucking in ends).

Knit Hat Pattern Specs
The knit hat will require a skein (less than 200 yards) of worsted weight yarn. You will also be using US 8 (5mm) knitting needles – a 16” circular and DPNs. Tools include a cable needle and yarn needle (for tucking in the ends). There is no gauge listed, per se, so you will have to wait and look at the pattern to determine how to resize the hat to fit your partner (i.e. do more or less pattern repeats, if necessary).

Sock Pattern Specs
The sock knitters will require 1 – 2 skeins (between 250 to 500 yards) of DK (8 ply) sock yarn. The amount of yarn required depends on the size of the sock you will be knitting. They recommend one skein for the women’s sizes and small or medium men’s sizes but two skeins (or one plus a contrasting color) for the larger men’s sizes. You will also be using US 4 double pointed needles (or size needed for gauge) and they recommend a US 4 - 12” circular needle, but it is optional and the whole sock can be worked with the DPNs. You will also need a yarn needle and stitch markers. The recommended gauge is 6 sts in stockinette = 1” (after blocking) and 8 rows = 1” (after blocking).

Initiating Contact
You will have to contact your partner to get their mailing address, sizing information and color preferences. I will e-mail everyone the bracket along with a list of participants and their e-mail addresses so that you can do so. Keep in mind that this is also meant to be a stash busting event so please don’t feel like you have to go out and purchase new yarn to participate. Feel free to use yarns from your stash, as long as they are the correct weight for the pattern.

The patterns will be posted on the HSKS6 blog THIS Sunday, September 21st at 10:00 AM CST and the dueling will begin!

Dueling Club Update

We have had a fantastic turnout for the duel club so far and I’m very excited to get the dueling started! Therefore, I will only be accepting applications through tomorrow (Friday, September 19th) at noon CST.

The bracket will be sent (via e-mail and with a link posted on the blog) on Friday evening and I will also post the specifications for round 1 at that time.

The pattern for round 1 will be posted on the HSKS6 blog at 10:00 AM CST on Sunday, September 21st and the dueling will begin!

So if any of you are deciding whether or not to join us, please do! For more information, please see the following blog post.

Picture Day!!!

This will be the first time that we're doing this :) Picture day will be on Monday, September 22nd.

So, what do you do? You will need to either post a real picture of yourself OR, if you really don't have a picture of yourself to post you can post a meez.

Hogwarts Happenings
Many of the students have gotten back into the swing of things and the newer students are learning what Hogwarts is all about. Amazingly HSKS 6 has seen the highest enrollment of male students! This is a good thing :)

The Beginning of the Year Term went off without a hitch! The party lasted well over three hours and some of the best dishes were shared in the potluck style feast. Of little concern is a particular stash of Firewhiskey and Butterbeer. Hopefully, though, we won't have any students forced to go through any rehabilitative classes because of their dependence on such beverages.

Tour of the Grounds Mishap
A few of the first years fell into the lake and got a first hand introduction to the merpeople in the village in the lake. We found out that Guinifer LaFleur could not swim!! Lucky Henry Longstaff had a solution. What do you think that was??

I few of the students have been seen with Canary Creams! I hope that does not get out of hand like it did 2 terms ago.

Hello, all!

It is time to announce the early House Points! I will also give a little explanation on how I add the points.

Specific activities in HSKS are worth numerical points. One of the early House Point incentives was to post the HSKS logo in the sidebar of your blog by Friday, September 12th. Each person that had the logo posted earned 5 House Points. I take all the points possible and divide them against the actual points in order to get a percentage. So, say there are 23 Gryffindors. The possible number of points that they can earn for the Early Points activity was 115. If only 20 of them participated in the activity then would receive 100 points. So, 100 divided by 115 will give me a participation percentage of 87%. All scores are accumulative.

Right now I rely heavily on the Head Girls to keep track of the scores and log them on a special sheet that I have created. At any time, however, sporadically for no reason and should I deem it necessary, I will go student by student to validate the scores to make sure that they are correct. So, if you ever see a drastic change in your House scores that would be the reason why.

Take Heed!!! Just because your House may run behind throughout the entire swap it does not mean that you should give up. In HSKS 2 Hufflepuff ran behind almost the entire swap, but because they found the Snitch in the third round they came from behind and won the House Cup. Overall, your House needs you to participate - that is mainly what this swap is about. So, sit back, have fun and make some long lasting friends :)

Meet Our New DADA Professor

I have been receiving a lot of inquiries about when our new DADA Professor would be arriving. He is now here at Hogwarts and I have been helping him get comfortable and acquainted with the school. I would like to introduce Professor Lucious..er..Lucius Whitmarsh.

Professor Whitmarsh comes to us after spending a term at Durmstrang. He was very disillusioned to find that at Durmstrang they were actually teaching the Dark Arts and, after seeing the results, he decided he wanted to teach young minds how to defend against those forces. I will tell you that he is very accomplished in working magic with his wand.

If you are interested in meeting with Professor Whitmarch, please see me as I am handling his appointment calendar.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ASTRID CLOVERLEAF!
JOIN US FOR CAKE AND PUMPKIN JUICE IN THE GREAT HALL!

BIRTHDAYS

If you have a birthday during this term at Hogwarts and would like to have it acknowledged, please post a comment to this post with your birthdate. It will be added to the birthday list in the sidebar.

Good Morning Hogwarts Students! I’m Agatha Vablatsky and I will be acting as the dueling club coordinator for this term.

For new students, here is an explanation of how the dueling club will work:

Essentially, all participants will be organized into brackets where everyone will be paired up with one person. The pattern will be released, and the first person to receive a hat or sock in the mail from their opponent will be dead. The person who is left standing will advance to the next round and will be paired with the winner from another pairing within the bracket. In the end, there will be one person standing from each bracket and they will be dubbed the dueling winner.

There will be a bracket for hat knitters and a bracket for sock knitters. You do not have to be a fast knitter to participate, but you should be able to finish a hat within 5 days and a pair socks in 1 1/2 to 2 weeks at minimum. In the HSKS5 dueling club, many of the hat knitters finished their hats within 1 – 2 days after the pattern was released. Similarly, the fastest sock knitters can usually complete a pair of socks in about 2 days although many took between 3 – 5 days to complete a pair of socks.

Keep in mind that sometimes it comes down to a race of the owls, with the post office being the deciding factor. Completing a project a day or two before your dueling partner doesn't mean anything if your post office decides to mail your package out a day late.

As far as shipping requirements, overnight mail is NOT allowed. It must go Priority. We recommend mailing your projects with delivery confirmation because if projects are received on the same day, the delivery confirmation will let us know when it was delivered. This will help us to alleviate any possible disputes as to who killed whom first.

New for this round of the swap is the inclusion of crocheters! In the beginning rounds of the competition, you will have the option to knit or crochet within your bracket. I’ll pair knitters with knitters and crocheters with crocheters within the hat or sock bracket. However, please note that the final round will be knitting ONLY, so you must be able to knit to participate.

More than anything, this is just a fun project. Don't NOT join just because you think you are a slow knitter.

Interested? If you would like to join, e-mail me at hsksduelclub at gmail dot com with the following information:

Potter Name
Bracket: Hat or Sock
Craft: Crochet or Knit

If you have further questions about the dueling club, please comment to this post and I will answer them in the comments so that others may get their questions answered too.

Agatha

Mailing Requirements

For those in the U.S. you will be required to purchase a Certified Mail Receipt Delivery Confirmation when you send your package off. I suggest the Delivery Confirmation only because it provides both proof of mailing and allows you to track your package to make sure that it gets to it's destination. When you purchase the Delivery Confirmation option you will need to email me the tracking number, which I will add to your individual database entry that I keep.

Certified Mail Delivery Confirmation provides proof of mailing at the time of mailing and date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. A delivery record is maintained by the USPS. Delivery Confirmation is available with First-Class Mail and Priority Mail. For an additional fee, Delivery Confirmation may be combined with restricted delivery or return receipt.

Flat Rate Boxes
Hopefully many of you know about this option, which the postal service provides. Flat Rate boxes!! Whatever you can fit into this box will only cost you $9.95 to ship, plus your Certified Mail. The joy of it is that you can get the boxes from the postal service for free. You can either order them online or visit your local postal site and request them in person. There is also a larger box option at $12.95.

    2. Yarn to compliment the theme of your kit in your pals house colors.

Fall Season
The weather is turning a little cooler, so let us be creative in some of the handmade items that we include in our pals kits.

Ravenclaw's Newest Resident

Welcome, Ravenclaws, to Hogwarts. Some of you may have noticed that we have a new resident here in Ravenclaw Tower. Yes, we have our own House Elf. She's quite shy, however, and I haven't been able to find out much about her. I don't think she even has a name! So my first challenge to you is to name our House Elf! Please post your suggestions to your blogs. We will have a House vote on the suggestions and a prize will go to the person who comes up with the winning name. Also..if anyone can find out anything about our House Elf, please fill us in.

With every swap more and more people have stepped up and assisted me with running it. I'm so eternally grateful to so many of you - especially those that gave me suggestions after the first and second HSKS's.

Special Thanks
I'd like to give a special thanks to Kristy Angus (kristo) for all her hard work in getting S.P.E.W. up and running during our Anniversary swap. The Society Promoting Excellent Wearables is an awesome addition to the swap.

And now, without further adieu . . .

Happy Birthday Ferula Finnigan!

Have some Butterbeer

And some birthday cake!

Hello, all!!

As a way to earn early House Points you can link the HSKS 6 logo in the sidebar of your blog.

The logo must be placed in your side bar and linked to either this blog or the main HSKS site. Preferably the main site, because it answers so many questions that someone might have concerning the swap. A former Professor here at Hogwarts posted a very nice tutorial on linking an image using a free image storage site such as Flickr. Please visit Miss Mandy's blog for more information. Each person will earn 5 House points for posting the image to their side bar by this Thursday, September 11th.
